Description
Three volumes of French religious scholarship, comprising two volumes of Entretiens sur l’Eglise Catholique by L’Abbe Henri Perreyve and one volume of Saint Paul: ses dernieres annees by C. Fouard. The books are bound in matching three-quarter brown leather with marbled paper boards and gilded top edges. The spines are decorated with gilt-tooled floral motifs, ruled lines, and titled in gold. The Perreyve work is identified as a Quatrieme Edition (Fourth Edition) published in Paris by Ancienne Maison Charles Douniol (P. Tequi) in 1901. The interior title page of the Perreyve volume features a blue circular ink stamp reading ST. ANDREW-ON-HUDSON LIBRARY POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. indicating ex-libris provenance. The volumes are in octavo format with rough-cut page edges. The title page transcription for Perreyve reads: ENTRETIENS SUR L’EGLISE CATHOLIQUE PAR L’Abbe HENRI PERREYVE Chanoine honoraire d’Orleans Professeur d’Histoire ecclesiastique a la Sorbonne QUATRIEME EDITION PARIS ANCIENNE MAISON CHARLES DOUNIOL P. TEQUI, LIBRAIRE-EDITEUR 29, rue de Tournon, 29 1901. The spines are lettered C. FOUARD / SAINT PAUL / SES DERNIERES ANNEES and H. PERREYVE / ENTRETIENS SUR L’EGLISE CATHOLIQUE / 1 and 2.
Condition report:
The collection shows moderate shelf wear consistent with age. There is rubbing and scuffing to the leather at the spines, joints, and corners (photos 1, 2, and 3). The marbled paper boards exhibit surface abrasions and edge wear (photo 3). Internally, the pages show age-toning and scattered foxing, primarily visible at the margins (photo 4). A purple metal paperclip is attached to an endpaper in one volume, leaving a slight indentation and possible oxidation mark (photo 4). The blue library stamp is clearly visible on the title page (photo 4). The rough-cut page edges show typical dust soiling.
