Description
A ten-volume set of John L. Stoddard’s Lectures published in Boston by Balch Brothers Co. in 1905 (MCMV). The volumes are bound in three-quarter brown leather with red and gold marbled paper-covered boards and matching marbled endpapers. The spines feature five raised bands and are ornately decorated with gilt-stamped floral motifs, gilt titles, and gilt volume contents. The volumes are an octavo format with gilded top edges. Each volume contains numerous photographic illustrations and color-tinted plates throughout. The title pages are printed in red and black ink with a circular color-tinted vignette. The title page of Volume Seven reads: JOHN L. STODDARD’S / LECTURES / [Circular vignette of a house] / COMPLETE IN TEN VOLUMES / VOLUME SEVEN / BOSTON / BALCH BROTHERS CO. / MCMV. The set documents global travel and geography at the turn of the 20th century, covering locations such as Norway, Switzerland, Athens, Venice, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Egypt, Japan, China, India, and various European cities.
Condition report:
The set shows moderate shelf wear consistent with age. There is rubbing and scuffing to the leather at the spine ends, raised bands, and corners across the set (Photo 1). The marbled paper on the boards shows light scuffing and minor pigment loss at the edges (Photo 2). A purple metal paperclip is attached to the upper edge of the frontispiece and title page in Volume Seven (Photo 3), which may result in localized rust staining or pressure marks to the paper. The internal pages exhibit light, even toning throughout but remain generally clean and free of significant foxing. The bindings appear secure, though there is typical aging to the leather joints.
