Description
A group of three volumes from the ten-volume Standard Edition set of The Library of Historic Characters and Famous Events of All Nations and All Ages. The set was edited by A. R. Spofford, Librarian of Congress; Frank Weitenkampf of the Astor Library; and Professor J. P. Lamberton. Published in Boston by the Art-Library Publishing Company under J. B. Millet, these volumes comprise Volume IV, Volume V, and Volume VI. Each volume is bound in brown half-leather over textured brown cloth boards, featuring decorative gilt-stamped spines and all edges gilt. The interiors include marbled endpapers and photogravure illustrations after paintings. The title page of Volume V includes a red and black printed title, an illustration of a building, and the stated dates of 1898-1899.
Condition report:
Significant wear and degradation is visible across all three volumes. Volume VI shows a large section of missing leather at the head of the spine (photo 1). All volumes exhibit heavy rubbing, scuffing, and peeling to the leather spines and corners (photo 2). Volume V contains metal paperclips attached to internal pages (photo 3). The pages show expected age-toning throughout.
