Description
This collection of volumes is from the Library of Valuable Knowledge series, a set of popular science and historical works published in the early 20th century. The titles present in this group include The Story of a Grain of Wheat by Edgar, The Story of Geographical Discovery by Jacobs, The Story of the Cotton Plant by Wilkinson, and The Story of Eclipses by George F. Chambers. Each book is bound in three-quarter dark green pebble-grained material over green cloth boards. The spines feature gilt-stamped lettering and four stylized floral motifs arranged between raised bands. The title page for The Story of Eclipses is transcribed as follows: THE STORY OF ECLIPSES BY GEORGE F. CHAMBERS, F.R.A.S. OF THE INNER TEMPLE, BARRISTER-AT-LAW AUTHOR OF THE STORY OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM THE STORY OF THE STARS A HANDBOOK OF DESCRIPTIVE ASTRONOMY, ETC. Below this text is a printed red circular device containing a stylized anchor with a snake entwined to form an S shape, followed by NEW YORK MCMXII. The volume includes a frontispiece illustration captioned THE TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN, Sept. 7, 1858. The interior pages and text block edges exhibit uniform tanning.
Condition report:
The volumes show moderate wear consistent with age and use. There is rubbing to the spine joints and corners of all volumes (photo 1, photo 2). A small area of material loss is visible at the tail of one spine (photo 1). The green cloth boards show light fading and minor staining (photo 2). General tanning is present to the interior pages and the edges of the text blocks (photo 3). A purple plastic-coated paperclip is currently attached to the frontispiece of one volume (photo 3).
