Description
A trio of bound volumes of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, comprising Volume XXXVII (1868), Volume XLII (1870-1871), and Volume LVII (1878). The volumes are bound in full dark brown and near-black leather, featuring decorative gilt-tooled bands and gold-lettered spines. The spines are lettered HARPER’S MAGAZINE above the volume numbers in Roman numerals: VOL. LVII., VOL. XXXVII., and VOL. XLII. The text blocks are finished with all edges gilt (AEG). One volume is shown open to the Contents of Volume XLII page, which covers the period from December 1870 to May 1871. This volume contains works by various 19th-century authors and illustrators, including S. S. Conant, Katherine G. Ware, Dr. J. B. Holder, Prof. James De Mille, H. M. Alden, R. Stoddard, W. R. Hooper, A. G. Constable, and George M. Towle. Listed articles include Along the Florida Reef (Illustrated), The American Baron, and Life in Brittany.
Condition report:
The leather bindings exhibit heavy rubbing, scuffing, and wear to the boards and joints (photo 1). There is significant chipping and loss to the leather at the head and tail of each spine (photo 1). Internal pages show light toning and scattered foxing, particularly on the flyleaves and endpapers (photo 2). A purple paperclip is attached to a flyleaf in one volume (photo 2).
