Description

A collection of leather-bound books of various sizes and subjects, primarily consisting of 19th-century works in English and French. The group includes a volume of Ballou’s Magazine, marked Vol. XLII, bound in dark brown leather with gilt bands and lettering. Also included are two volumes of the French work Histoire Universelle de l’Eglise, designated as Vol. II and Vol. III, featuring tan leather bindings with black title labels and gilt-stamped bands. The largest volume in the collection is titled Shakspere and contains the Doubtful Plays; this volume is bound in brown leather with five raised bands on the spine, decorated with small gilt-stamped floral or fleur-de-lis motifs in the compartments. The volumes feature various decorative gilt elements and are representative of period library bindings.

Condition report:

The collection shows significant wear and aging across all volumes. There is heavy scuffing and rubbing to the leather boards and spines, with visible loss of material at the head and tail of the spines on the Shakespeare volume and both volumes of Histoire Universelle de l\'Eglise (photo 1). The joints of the Shakespeare volume appear cracked or starting, and all volumes show bumping and wear to the corners with some board exposure. The text block edges are darkened and exhibit dust soiling consistent with long-term shelf storage (photo 1).
