Description

This lot consists of three uniform volumes from the collected works series published by Walter J. Black, Inc. The set includes The Works of Emerson, The Works of Daudet, and The Works of Chekhov. Each octavo-sized book is bound in dark brown flexible leather with decorative gilt-stamped spines. The spines are divided into panels by gilt rules, featuring a repeating floret and lattice pattern alongside the author and title. The front boards are decorated with a centrally impressed heraldic shield surmounted by a crown, accented with small green and red polychrome dots. This central motif is framed by a scrolled foliate border that includes additional green and red highlights. The text blocks feature edges that have toned over time.

Condition report:

The leather bindings show significant age-related wear, characterized by extensive surface crazing and fine cracking across the front boards and along the spine joints. The leather at the head and tail of the spines exhibits rubbing and small losses. Corner tips are rubbed and slightly bumped. The top edges of the text blocks are toned and show visible dust-soiling. While the gilt on the spines remains largely legible, it shows some rubbing and dimming of the luster. No internal defects are visible from the exterior inspection.
