Description

This collection consists of several small-format volumes from the 19th century, primarily bound in full brown calf and morocco leather. The bindings feature various decorative gilt-tooled spines and labels. Included in the assortment is Constant Fouard’s Saint Paul ses Missions, bound in brown morocco with ornate gilt spine flourishes, a red leather title label, and white printed characters reading 226 FOU at the base of the spine. Another volume is titled Ciceronis and is bound in calf with four horizontal gilt-ruled bands. A volume titled Anthon’s Latin Lessons features a red title label with gilt lettering and horizontal gilt bands. The collection also includes the first volume of Ann Radcliffe’s The Romance of the Forest, bound in calf with a red spine label. A fifth volume is bound in matching brown leather with five horizontal gilt bands, though the title on the spine is no longer legible. The text blocks for all volumes show age-related darkening and foxing to the edges.

Condition report:

The volumes exhibit wear consistent with their age and frequent handling. There is overall rubbing to the leather surfaces, joints, and extremities of all books (photo 1). The corners are variously bumped and abraded. The spine of the Fouard volume shows small losses and chipping at the head and foot. The Ciceronis volume has a visible crack along the front joint and wear at the spine ends. The Anthon volume shows significant chipping and loss of leather at the head of the spine. The Radcliffe volume and the final unidentified volume show moderate rubbing and small losses at the top and bottom of the spines. The text blocks across the collection show moderate to heavy foxing and darkening to the page edges as seen from the top view (photo 1).
