Description

A collection of volumes containing the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1884 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company at The Riverside Press, Cambridge. The volumes are bound in late nineteenth-century half-leather with brown leather spines and corners over marbled paper-covered boards. The spines feature gilt-stamped lettering and decorative horizontal motifs. Visible titles on the spines include Mosses from an Old Manse, Septimius Felton, Tales and Sketches, Wonder Book, Tanglewood Tales, and Our Old Home, and English Note-Books. The edges of the text blocks are marbled to match the boards. An open volume contains an etched frontispiece titled ST. PAUL’S, LONDON protected by a tissue guard. The title page for volume three of Our Old Home and English Note-Books includes a vignette illustration of a house and the publisher’s imprint identifying locations in Boston and New York.

Condition report:

The leather bindings show moderate wear and scuffing at the extremities, most notably at the head and foot of the spines and on the corner tips (photo 1, 2). There is minor fading and rubbing to the gilt decorative elements and lettering on the spines (photo 1). The interior pages exhibit light age-toning and scattered foxing, particularly on the tissue guards and title pages (photo 3). A modern purple paperclip is present in one volume (photo 3).
