Lot 126:
Description
This impressionistic watercolor on paper depicts a coastal scene in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The composition focuses on a cluster of weathered wooden shacks elevated on stilts over a shoreline, featuring a prominent tall chimney and a lone rowboat resting on the water or mudflats to the right. The artist employed a soft color palette dominated by ochre, muted reds, and blues with loose, atmospheric brushwork to convey a sense of calm and decay. The work is housed in a wide, heavily ornate gilded composite frame featuring deep relief scrolling floral and foliate motifs. A handwritten inscription in cursive is located in the lower right corner and reads The Abandoned Wharf at Low Tide / Provincetown, Mass. No artist signature is visible on the front of the work. The paper substrate is mounted behind glass with a visible mat.
Visible image width: 10 1/8 inches
Overall frame width: 17 3/8 inches.
Condition report:
The artwork shows significant age-related toning and yellowing across the entire paper surface (photo 1). There is a distinct line of dark mat burn or acid staining along the interior edges of the mount (photo 3). Multiple spots of foxing and brown staining are present, primarily concentrated in the upper sky region (photo 1 and 3). The paper substrate exhibits some rippling or cockling within the frame (photo 2). The ornate gilded frame shows minor surface wear, small chips to the composite material typical of age, and an accumulation of dust in the deep relief sections (photo 1 and 3).
