Lot 136:
Description
A small rectangular enamel on copper plaque depicting a whimsical circus scene. The central composition features a striped carnival tent in shades of green, yellow, and red, flanked by two large multicolored wheels beneath a strand of festive pennant flags. The artwork is rendered in a vibrant folk-art style with a thick, tactile application of enamel against a light blue sky background. The copper support exhibits a characteristic slight convex bow typical of the medium. The plaque is presented within a triple mat consisting of a thin gold-toned inner fillet, a charcoal gray mat, and a wide pale blue outer mat under glass. It is housed in an ornate, gold-toned carved frame featuring a repeating scalloped or thumbprint motif. No signature, maker’s marks, or labels are visible on the front of the artwork.
Visible artwork: 3.5 x 5.5 inches
Overall frame: 10.5 x 12.5 inches.
Condition report:
The enamel plaque appears to be in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or losses to the vitreous surface. The copper plate has a slight horizontal bow, which is a standard result of the high-heat firing process. The ornate frame exhibits minor surface wear and small scattered losses to the gilt finish, primarily along the outer edges and corners as seen in the primary image (photo 1). The matting and glass are well-preserved with no visible toning or damage.
