Description

This is an antique three-drawer spool cabinet, originally used as a retail display chest for sewing thread. The cabinet is constructed of wood with a stained finish and features a slightly overhanging top and a molded base. Each of the three drawers is fitted with two white porcelain knobs and features gold-toned stenciled lettering on the front. The top drawer is stenciled MACHINE TWIST, the middle drawer is stenciled EUREKA, and the bottom drawer is stenciled 100 YD SPOOLS. The rear panel displays visible dovetail joinery at the corners. A circular black ink stamp is present on the back panel; the characters on the top curved line are partially illegible, starting with W. H. C. followed by a faded name and & CO. The middle line reads WAREHAM ST. and the bottom line reads BOSTON.
Width: Approximately 20 1/4 inches
Height: Approximately 10 3/4 inches.

Condition report:

The cabinet shows signs of age and retail use. The wood finish has various surface scratches, nicks, and small dings, particularly on the top surface (Photo 1). The gold stenciling on the drawer fronts shows significant wear, fading, and loss, which is most prominent on the top and bottom drawers (Photo 2). The back panel has a horizontal crack running across the center (Photo 5). The porcelain knobs appear to be original and are in good condition, although there is minor oxidation visible on the metal center screws (Photo 2). The interior of the drawers shows typical staining and dust accumulation (Photo 4).
