Description
A four-drawer country chest featuring an oak top and drawer fronts with a cream-painted case. The piece is constructed with an oak primary wood, showcasing a prominent open grain on the top and drawers. The back is composed of three wide, horizontal hand-planed secondary wood planks, likely pine or poplar, secured with nails. The top is joined to the side panels with visible joinery at the rear corners. Each of the four flush-mount drawers is equipped with brass bail handles and circular rosettes, and features a central keyhole. The chest includes circular brass escutcheons with a rope-twist border design. One escutcheon is currently detached and resting on the top surface. The case frame and base have been updated with a contemporary off-white painted finish. A small blue adhesive tag is present on the upper left side of the backboard. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The chest exhibits signs of contemporary modification, including a painted finish on the case frame and base (photo 1). The oak top and drawer fronts appear to have been refinished. One brass escutcheon is detached and sits on the top surface, held by a single nail (photo 2). There is a small hole located near the rear right edge of the top surface (photo 2). The backboards show age-appropriate wear including dust, cobwebs, and minor abrasions (photo 3). General surface wear, light scratches, and small indentations consistent with age and use are visible throughout the piece.
