Description

A set of four English fine bone china collector plates produced by Aynsley, featuring illustrations by Lawrence Woodhouse based on scenes from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. The plates are circular with scalloped edges and gilded rims. Each plate is decorated with a transfer-printed central illustration framed by a border of holly, mistletoe, and berries. The set comprises the complete four-part series issued annually: the 1979 first edition depicting Mr. Fezziwig’s Ball, the 1980 second edition depicting Marley’s Ghost, the 1981 third edition depicting The Cratchit Family, and the 1982 fourth edition depicting Christmas Day. The reverse of each plate bears a blue printed mark consisting of a crown above a circular seal containing the word AYNSLEY. Below this seal is printed EST. 1775, followed by Made in England, Fine Bone China, and ENGLAND. A blue cursive signature reading Lawrence Woodhouse is present on each plate. The reverse also identifies the specific edition and year, the title of the scene, and includes a printed quote from the novel relevant to the illustration. The plates are shown with two black plastic and two wooden display stands.

Condition report:

The plates appear to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs across the set (photos 1 and 2). The gilded rims are bright and intact, and the transfer decorations show no visible signs of wear, loss, or fading (photo 2). The reverse of each plate is clean and shows no evidence of crazing or staining (photo 3).
