Description

A nineteenth-century Neoclassical cast spelter sculpture depicting the Greek poet Sappho after the model by James Pradier. The figure is depicted in a pensive, seated pose, draped in classical attire with her head resting in her hand, leaning against a lyre. The sculpture is finished in a dark, matte black patina. The sculpture is a hollow casting with an integral rocky base. Where the material has broken away at the base, the underlying silvery-gray white metal alloy is visible. The piece is missing the separate wooden or marble plinth it was originally designed to be mounted upon. There s a stable crack sable in the base of the sculpture shown in several of the photographs.

Condition report:

The sculpture exhibits significant condition issues including a crack at the rear corner of the base, visible in photos 4, 6, and 7. The original separate mounting plinth is missing. The black patina shows general surface wear, minor scuffing, and an accumulation of dust as seen in photos 1 through 5.
