Description
A pair of American-made clear glass apothecary shop bottles featuring original ground glass stoppers. Each rectangular bottle is constructed from mold-blown glass and features a curved, inset, reverse-painted glass label with gold-toned borders and black serif lettering. One label reads TR. HYOSCYAM. and the other reads ELIX. TER. HYD. The base of each bottle features embossed lettering identifying the manufacturer. The larger bottle base reads W . T . & C O . positioned above U . S . A . confirming attribution to the Whitall Tatum Company. The smaller bottle bears a matching but less distinct version of this mark. The stoppers are of a coordinating round disk form with ground glass shanks designed for a secure fit within the ground necks. May or may not have cracks or chips.
Taller bottle: 8 1/4 inches (height to top of stopper); 2 3/4 inches (base width)
Shorter bottle: 7 1/4 inches (height to top of stopper); 2 1/2 inches (base width).
Condition report:
The glass bodies are in good condition with no visible cracks or significant chips, though both show minor internal residue and cloudiness from age (photo 3). Both ground glass stoppers are present and appear original, showing typical minor wear and light scuffing to the ground surfaces while remaining functional (photo 4). The TR. HYOSCYAM. label is well-preserved with minor wear to the gold border. The ELIX. TER. HYD. label shows significant dark brown staining and discoloration along the bottom edge, likely caused by the degradation of the adhesive behind the glass label (photo 1, 2).
