Lot 41:
Description
A pair of clear glass pharmaceutical containers produced by Whitall Tatum and Company. These bottles are designed in a French square form with rounded corners and ground glass mouths. The pair includes one narrow-mouth bottle intended for liquids and one wide-mouth jar intended for powders or pastes. Both containers feature hand-painted label-under-glass inserts with a white background, black block lettering, and a decorative gold radiating sunburst motif at the corners enclosed by red and gold border lines. The liquid bottle is labeled LIQ.ANTISEP. and the wide-mouth jar is labeled DENTIFRIC. Both retain their original ground glass stoppers; the liquid bottle features a solid stopper while the jar features a hollow-blown stopper. The base of each bottle features embossed text reading W. T. CO. U. S. A. followed by PAT. APR. 2D. 1889, identifying the manufacturer as Whitall Tatum and Company and providing the patent date. May or may not have chips or cracks.
Height: Approximately 8 1/2 inches including stoppers.
Width: Approximately 2 3/4 inches at the base.
Condition report:
This pair is in excellent antique condition. The clear glass exhibits some light surface dust and minor internal clouding or residue consistent with age and previous use (photo 1). The label-under-glass inserts are very well-preserved, showing only minor foxing to the white ground and light wear to the gilt borders (photo 1). The ground glass mouths and stoppers show no visible chips, cracks, or significant abrasions (photo 3). The ground joints remain clean and provide a secure fit.
