Description
Three antique volumes featuring decorative cloth and leather bindings. The first volume is William Black’s Strange Adventures of a Phaeton, issued as an Aldine Edition by publisher Frank F. Lovell and Company. It is bound in cream-colored decorative cloth with elaborate dark ink patterning and gilt-faded lettering on the spine. The second volume is The Intellectual Development of Europe, Volume 1, by John William Draper, bound in dark brown leather with five raised bands and gilt-tooled lettering in the spine compartments. The third volume is François Guizot’s Origines du Gouvernement Representatif, Tome 1, bound in dark leather with four raised bands, gilt-tooled floral motifs, and gilt-lettered spine compartments. All three volumes feature period typographic treatments and darkened page edges.
Condition report:
The collection shows significant age-related wear and deterioration. The cloth-bound volume displays heavy darkening to the spine, fading of the gilt text, and fraying at the spine head and tail (photo 1). The Draper volume shows scuffing to the leather, particularly along the joints and the five raised bands, with wear to the spine ends (photo 1). The Guizot volume exhibits a significant loss of leather at the head of the spine, heavy scuffing to the joints and edges, and bumped corners (photo 1). All volumes have darkened top edges and general shelf wear consistent with age.
